Facelift

As you get older, a number of factors contribute to the aging of your face. Stress, sun and wind exposure, genetics, and even loss of fat in your face conspire to leave you looking older. Wrinkles may form on your forehead, around your eyes, and around your mouth. Folds and sagging skin appear on your previously smooth neck. Facelift and mini facelift are surgical procedures that can help turn back the clock and leave you with a rejuvenated appearance.

People may shy away from facelift or even mini facelift surgery as an anti-aging option because they are afraid of unnatural looking results, such as the face looking too pulled or the hairline being raised. My experience allows me to address both the skin and underlying muscle structure together to ensure a natural look.

What is the Facelift Procedure Like?

The procedure involves incisions in front of and behind the ear that may extend to the scalp. There are optimal areas to place the scars to help to camouflage them. Once the incisions are made, I will separate the skin from the underlying fat and muscle to gently tighten your facial muscles. I will also remove the excess skin and jowls from the cheeks and neck. The skin is then re-draped accordingly to the patient’s individual needs.

Mini facelift is a less invasive procedure where I target the excess and sagging skin of the jawline and upper neck. This can be performed as a preventative measure for those not yet ready for a full facelift or as a touch-up for previous facelift patients. Often times other procedures, such as eyelid rejuvenation, may be performed at the same time.

How Long is Recovery from Facelift Surgery?

Your recovery time will vary depending on your individual needs. It is helpful to keep your head elevated in the days immediately following your surgery to reduce the initial post-operative swelling. You will initially have a large head dressing to cover the operative areas.

Once the dressings and drains are removed, your face will have some swelling and bruising. You may find the puffiness and discoloration more pronounced in some portions of your face than others. This usually resolves in a week or two. It is possible to experience some areas of facial numbness, but this usually resolves within a few months.

Since the healing process is gradual, wait several weeks for an accurate picture of your new look. Facelifts usually last about 5-10 years, depending on the age of the patient and how much elasticity is present in the skin. Later facelift revisions typically are much easier to recover from.
