How to Eat Healthy During the Holiday Season

With the holiday season fast approaching, eating healthy can often prove difficult. Holidays come with celebration and with celebration, comes food. Over indulging in some of you holiday favorites may be hard to resist, and if you’ve been losing weight or maintaining your weight, holidays just may be your worst enemy. Fortunately they don’t have to be.

The best way to avoid over indulging on unhealthy foods is to prepare. Going hungry anywhere will cause you to binge and eat the traditional high calorie food that is usually associated with the holidays. To avoid this, eat before you go out. When holiday shopping, never go to the mall or stores hungry. The majority of malls have food courts full of food that is unhealthy. Eating before hand will help prevent you from indulging.

A big mistake people make is deciding to go skip a meal when going to a holiday party to save calories. Showing up hungry may cause you to snack or to even splurge, go off your diet, and eat unhealthily. Have a light healthy snack such as a bowl of whole-grain cereal or some low-fat yogurt. Eating a healthy snack before hand may also lead you to make better choices when approaching the buffet table.

Holiday parties are also typically full of alcohol and beverages rich in sugar and calories. Try to avoid drinking these beverages. Stick to water, sparkling water, or low calorie beverages. If you feel the urge to drink alcohol, choose wisely and try to limit yourself only one drink. A glass of wine for instance can have anywhere from 100 to 300 plus calories. If you do go for wine, choose wine that has lesser calories like white wine or sparkling wine.

The holiday time is a time to celebrate and enjoy company with friends and family. While maintaining your diet and eating healthy is important, having fun and relishing in the festivities is also just as important. Try not to punish yourself and every once and a while reward yourself with a bite or two of favorite holiday food. After all, the holidays only happen once a year.
