Excess Skin Removal
Overview of Excess Skin Removal
Losing weight can be a very rewarding experience; however, significant weight loss can sometimes result in excess sagging of the skin. After dramatic weight loss, the skin may not be able to return to its original form due to a loss of elasticity. And, regardless of diet or exercise, the only way to remove this excess skin is through surgery. Those who commonly seek excess skin removal have undergone bariatric surgery (i.e. gastric bypass, lap-band) or may have excess skin due to a lack of elasticity as a result of aging and gravity.
For many, undergoing excess skin removal surgery allows them to complete their weight loss goals and achieve their desired body shape. Excess skin removal surgery can be applied to almost any part of the body including the abdomen, upper arms, inner thighs and the buttocks area. Excess skin removal in multiple areas can be performed within one operation. It is important to understand that while excess skin removal will help you achieve a more contoured, natural figure, this type of surgery requires large incisions and, therefore, will produce scars. Nevertheless, patients typically report being extremely satisfied with the outcome of their surgery.
Your Excess Skin Removal Surgery
Excess skin removal is a highly customized surgery since it can be used to target many different areas of the body depending on your needs. The surgery is usually an outpatient procedure; however, if extensive skin removal is needed, you may be required to stay overnight.
The procedure requires the use of general anesthesia and can take multiple hours. Excess skin removal involves making a strategically placed incision in the area that is being targeted to remove the excess skin. Through this incision, underlying tissue and the skin is tightened and contoured. Liposuction may also be used to complement and create the desired shape.
Results of Excess Skin Removal
Over all results from excess skin removal surgery will vary according to what areas you target. Regardless of the treatment area, you will notice clothes fitting better and exercise becoming easier. If you are like most patients completing dramatic weight loss, excess skin removal allows you to be more comfortable with your body both physically and mentally, and can increase your quality of life.
Recovery After Excess Skin Removal
Following excess skin removal, Dr. Sardo will apply bandages and dressings to the incisions, and she may insert drains to reduce swelling and fluid build-up and aid in healing. Within 24 hours of surgery, you will be up and walking to help promote circulation and mobilize excess fluids which ultimately helps the healing.
Bruising and swelling is common and the use of ice packs can help decrease this greatly. Any pain you experience can be managed with pain medication. It is very important to avoid any stress or straining, as this can be potentially harmful to the incisions.
Typically, your stitches will be dissolving type sutures and will be reinforced with surgical tapes. While you will notice a dramatic decrease in the amount of excess skin immediately, the full results of your surgery will not be realized for about six months because of the necessary healing time.
Risks/Cost of Skin Removal Surgery
While excess skin removal is a commonly performed procedure, there are associated risks. As with any cosmetic surgery, there is a risk of infection as well as unfavorable scarring. In addition, there is a risk of persistent pain, nerve damage, asymmetry, skin discoloration, and prolonged swelling. Even more rare, there is a potential of wound separation which could create the need for revision surgery.
Depending on the area and the amount of skin removed, excess skin removal can cost anywhere from $5000 to $10,000.
